Mike Kelly
Townsville Crocs NBL
"In the NBL you never know who is watching at a game or at training, on centre court or playing in an old musty warehouse assessing your skills, evaluating your commitment. It could be anybody, perhaps an agent with the potential to make you an offer you can't refuse.
"In my Christian walk too! As a Christian I'm always on show. Fans, teammates, opposition players are watching. I am a witness and an Ambassador for Christ. As a Christian I know another who is watching, Jesus! As he chooses to use me on His team, and therefore privileged to bring others to Him. He encourages and coaches, cheers and advises.
"I was brought up in a Christian family with Catholic parents and a Catholic education. Although church attendance seemed automatic and a bit formal, I always had a personal relationship with God, and talked to Him regularly.
"It was at Westmont College (a Christian University in Santa Barbara, California) I was questioned and challenged, and experienced a deeper commitment to Christ for His sacrifice on the cross for me personally, and I recognised this meant being responsible in the way I live - in good humor.
"I came to Australia in 1987, played in the NSW State League, then five years in the CBA (Specters). I was picked by South East Melbourne Magic in 1992. I discovered very quickly top sport anywhere in Australia could be one big hedonistic party without too much concern as to any of the inevitable consequences. My decision was to knuckle down to the serious training, dedication to my goals and devotion to my Lord.
(Mike is married to Annette and was named 1997 NBL best defensive player and 1995 Most Valuable player in the Championship Series)
