Champion National Basketball League (NBL) swingman and MVP for the Victorian Titans Jason Smith faces the success and promise of Olympic selection with genuine humility. "I have faith that God will take me where he wants." He adds, "there isn't any greater reward (for me) than to stand up for Christ." Although young in Olympic basketball terms Smith seems confident to express his definite faith in Christ.
Considered by many as the next generation guard replacing the likes of Andrew Gaze (Melbourne Tigers) in the Olympic team Smith exemplifies not only a superior attitude on the court, but off it as well. The twenty-three year old takes the perspective that basketball, "is just a game… and it's difficult without God. Fans love you and then hate you," but most important to Smith is God's unconditional love.
"Ultimately I want to go to heaven… I try to keep things into perspective, that what really matters to me."
In a world where demands are high and temptation abound Smith's ambition is to remain genuine in his life and his faith. He reflected on the time when a mother approached him asking, "Could I tell my son that you were at church tonight?" "Sure… but why?" came the reply. "He doesn't think anyone cool goes to church." Jason looked quizzed, "I guess that makes me cool, right?"
Gentile in nature and genuine in faith, Jason attributes most of his conviction to his believing mother. "Her tenacity and willingness to let us find God for ourselves… [makes her] the biggest influence in our lives (speaking also of his brother Darren who recently joined him at the Titans).
A final bit of advice from this young champion, "Set your goals high… anything is possible… with God."
